The trend now is using Point-of-Sale terminals to get money from congregation members. What actually would be your perception when you enter a church and see this?

 

 

Late Benin Monarch, Oba Erediauwa

 

All residents in Benin kingdom have been advised not to cook with fire on Sunday - the day of Igberimwin in the royal funeral rites programme of the late Oba of Benin. 

 

This was made known in a press statement signed and released by Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, Mr. Frank Irabor.

 

According to the statement, cooking without fire is in accordance with Benin customs and tradition and is part of activities for the continuation of the 15 days funeral rites of late Benin Monarch, Oba Erediauwa.

Caress Manufacturing Company, an England-based company, has warned Nigerians and other African countries on the usage of fake earrings and piercing kit for women especially new born children. 

 

Vanguard reports that the company through its Business Development Manager, Samantha Nicholson, said that the usage of the fake piercing kit can cause loss of hearing. 

 

She explained that the fake earrings are made from brass which can cause irritation and other skin and ear reactions. 

 

According to Samantha, “Brass can cause an allergic reaction leading to a skin infection. Common reactions are spots and rashes. Skin might get itchy, dry and irritated and appear red, flakey or scaly. Nigeria, Ghana, The Gambia, Ivory Coast are the main countries that are prone to this fake product.” 

 

She further explained that piercing kits and earrings are to be made from good environment and gold, “The quality of our product is of utmost important to us. We’ve found with most fake studs they are made with brass with just a flash of gold.

 

"Not only is this a health hazard but also the studs will tarnish quickly and won’t last long Samantha revealed that the 30 year old manufacturing company is sounding the warning gong because there are Chinese companies supplying Nigerian and African with fake earrings and piercing kits. 

“We are facing problems with China producing inferior and cheap imitations of our studs. They are trying to pass them off as our best-selling No1 Original Studs. Not only is this an infringement on our trademark it’s also damaging our brand by supplying substandard products illegally under our name.

 

"We are working with our attorneys in Nigeria to try and get these fakes off the market place and prosecute anyone that is selling these illegal and unsafe products,” she added.

Rose Abwona

 

A shameful incident has seen two family members from Kakamega in Zimbabwe fighting over who should inherit their late brother’s wife.

 

According to The Nairobian, Alfred Mukhobi died in 2010 after a short illness, leaving behind his wife, Rose Abwona, 45, a mother of nine.

 

However, things are not looking well for the late man's cousins. Mukhobi’s cousin, Alexander Alusa, who went ahead to inherit Rose and has been taking care of her and providing for her kids has now incurred the wrath of Mukhobi's brother, Henry Mukhobi who is threatening fire. He accused Alusa of being selfish and greedy.

 

It is alleged that on several occasions, he (Henry) attacked Alusa, leaving him with serious injuries.

 

Giving details why the two are fighting, Henry said that Alusa’s decision to inherit his late brother’s wife was wrong and could anger Mukhobi’s spirits. He claimed he was the rightful inheritor because he was the deceased’s brother.

“If my late brother learns that he inherited his wife, trust me, he will be very angry,” said Henry adding that, “This man Alusa even moved into my brother’s house, which is disrespectful! What nonsense is that?”   

 

However, Alusa has refused to leave Rose saying that she is in love with him.

 

“I was to build Rose a new house, but the community didn’t allow it. She appreciates the fact that I have been paying her kids’ school fees and providing for her since her husband died,” the 69-year-old father of one child who lost his wife in 1998, said.

 

He added: “I work at a hotel in Kakamega town as a plumber and living in Khayega is more convenient since I can get to town early enough, compared to when I used to live in Chirobani. I removed one iron sheet from  my late cousin’s house and replaced it with a brand new one as tradition dictates. I also shifted the bed position to signify a new beginning."

 

However, told has revealed that she loves Alusa and has no plans of leaving him since he even paid her dowry.

“I love him. He gave my parents Sh20,000 and one cow that my late husband hadn’t finished paying,”she said.  She accused Henry of being abusive and disrespectful some years back after she refused his advances.

 

The Federal Government on Tuesday revealed the cause of tomato scarcity in the country as it said the pest, Tuta absoluta, popularly known as ‘Tomato Ebola’, is responsible for the massive destruction of tomato in farmlands in Nigeria. The destructive pest has so far invaded six states in Nigeria. Farmers all over the country have been warned to be careful and advised farmers on the management skills to use so as to curb the spread of the pest.

 

Speaking on the issue, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Audu Ogbeh, revealed that the highly reproductive nature of the tomato pest and lack of management knowledge for containment allowed it to spread which led to the destruction of tomato fruits in Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau and Lagos.

 

He also stated that the government is already consulting with experts in other find a way out.

 

He said, “The pest can also attack even pepper and Irish potato. So we are confronting something quite serious. But the good thing is that we are tackling it right now as experts will commence work immediately. We are bringing the commissioners and governors of states to jointly attack this pest, which, if not dealt with, will create serious problems for food security in our country.”

 

Also, the minister revealed that Nigeria spent huge sums importing substandard tomato paste which affected many in Nigeria.

 

“We have two processing plants for tomato paste in Nigeria, Erisco and Dangote, and their capacities are huge. We welcome their arrival because our annual import bill of tomato paste is about $400m and it is a good sign that we can now produce here and make money for our farmers.” he said.

 

Reacting to the recent development, CropLife International, a group of agro-professionals, advocated the use of hazard-based approach rather than a risk-based methodology. The group also called for the promotion and adoption of relevant biotechnologies in farming activities. 

 

A trader identified as Mr. Kenneth Ekeanyanwu, has died barely two weeks after he paid N10m as ransom to secure his release from kidnappers in Calabar, Cross River State.

 

The man who owned Daybreak Bakery along Chamley Street in Calabar, was kidnapped by gunmen from his factory on May 6 and was said to have been released on May 11.

 

However, after paying the money, Ekeanyanwu was taken straight to the hospital after he gained freedom due to his deplorable health condition as a result of his torture by the kidnappers. He later died at the hospital.

 

According to reports, Igbo traders had threatened to close down all shops operated by traders from the South-East extraction in Calabar to protest against the incessant kidnap of their kinsmen. The sudden death of Ekeanyanwu will surely cause tension in the area as traders have complained endlessly about their predicament without any help.

 

According to a Punch report, the President-General, Igbo Community in Cross River State, Chief Albert Enya, has expressed shock over the demise of Ekeanyanwu.

 

He stressed that his death was unacceptable, adding that government must take extreme measure to stop kidnapping.

 

Enya said, “The news of Kenneth Ekeanyanwu’s death is a big shock to the Igbo community in the state and it is highly unacceptable. The government must intensify effort to completely annihilate this hydra headed problem.

“We want appeal to the Governor Ben Ayade and the Cross River State House of Assembly to pass the law on death penalty against kidnappers as obtainable in states like Anambra, Edo and few others. This is the only way to handle this matter that will serve as a deterrent to others.”

 

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. John Eluu, said he was not aware of the development.

Tomatoes is a favourite staple in Nigeria, and so, a large number of people who cannot cope with the inflation in its price are hesitant to make the widely enjoyed stew and are now seeking alternative ways to make sauces with which to complement their daily meals.
In a bid to find a solution, we have put together a list of 5 economical, local stews and sauces that can be made without tomatoes.

(1) Garden egg sauce

A very popular delicacy in the southern parts of the country, Garden egg sauce can substitute for the tomato stew any day. The basic ingredients needed include: Garden eggs (either purple “aubergine”, white or green), palm oil, smoked fish, ground pepper (either chili or scotch bonnet), iru (rinsed), onion, crayfish and salt to taste. It can be used to eat rice, yam or plantain.

(2) Banga stew

Popularly referred to as Ofe Akwu, banga stew is a palm nut stew native to the Igbo tribe of Nigeria. While making this stew can take a lot of time as you have to extract the palm oil juice from the palm nuts, it is usually worth the stress in the end as the taste is absolutely yummy. The only ingredients you need include: palm fruits or palm fruit concentrate, beef, dry fish, vegetable (scent leaves for ofe akwu or dried and crushed bitter leaves for Delta-style banga soup), onions, crayfish, stock cubes, iru, salt and chilli pepper (to taste).

(3) Ofada stew

Also called “Ayamase”, Ofada stew that is usually made to go with a special kind of local rice referred to as Ofada rice. The sauce can however be used to eat normal white rice, yam, plantain and even spaghetti. The sauce is pretty easy to make and the only ingredients you need include: unripe habanero peppers, green tatashe or green bell peppers, locust bean seasoning (iru, ogiri okpei or dawadawa), red palm oil, onion, crayfish, assorted meat and fish.

(4) Miyan Kuka

A delicacy from the northern part of the country, Miyan Kuka is also known as the Boabab leaf stew. It is a favorite of the Hausa tribe and is usually served with white rice. The key ingredients for preparing this stew include : beef, onion, dried fish, hot peppers (washed, soaked and flaked), kuka [baobab] leaves (pounded to paste), dawadawa(fermented dried seeds of the African locust bean pressed into a ball or a cake), yaji(suya seasoning), a pinch of potash, palm oil, seasoning cubes and of course, salt to taste.

(5) Pumpkin leaf sauce

Pumpkin leaf, otherwise known as Ugu, is one of most widely used vegetables in Nigeria. Pumpkin leaf sauce which is not only very tasty but also very healthy is basically a sautee of fluted pumpkin leaf and onions. It certainly does not taste a long time to cook. The ingredients needed include: chopped pumpkin leaves, seasoned beef or chicken, sliced to strips (optional), meat stock, vegetable oil, chilli pepper, onion bulb, seasoning and salt to taste.

A video has shown the horrifying moment a woman is run over by a tram as she crosses the tracks but miraculously survives.

 

Dashcam from a nearby car in the city of Sosnowiec in southern Poland filmed the moment the oblivious lady walked straight into the path of the oncoming vehicle and was dragged along the track before being sucked underneath.

 

Fortunately the quick-thinking tram driver managed to react in time and slammed on the brakes preventing the victim from being pulled under the wheels of the heavy transport vehicle.

 

However the woman, 42, was still seriously injured in the alarming accident. 

 

According to rescue workers, the unnamed lady was still able to speak when they turned up, and they managed to remove her from underneath the tram with the aid of firemen. She was then rushed to hospital.

 

She has suffered acute internal injuries but is expected to make a recovery.

 

The footage from Tuesday 26 April showing the heart-stopping moment she disappears under the tram has now been released by police in Sosnowiec.

 

They hope to warn citizens to always be vigilant and take more care when crossing roads or tram tracks.

 

It is unclear in the grainy video whether the woman's negligence was caused by her listening to music or talking on the telephone.

 

The incident occurred at 7.40am but the trams were restored to action by 9am.

 

Local police were contacted but are unable to provide more information as the accident is currently under investigation.

Igbainoba Uche Rose and the contraband substances found on her

 

Igbainoba Uche Rose, 24, from Edo State, was arrested at the Lagos airport after landing from Dubai after substances suspected to be hard drugs were found on her.

 

A suspected member of the cartel, Ofor Kamsochukwu Chimezie, was also traced and arrested. Rose, who works as a clerical officer, said she was promised N500k for the deal.

 

Rose is yet to be paid her remuneration for the illicit trade. The young lady is currently being investigated and will be charged to court soonest.

A pastor based in Rustenburg in the North West province was yesterday bust with a cow’s head and other muthi in his church, iMzansi reports.

 

It was gathered that the pastor who recently started a church has just amassed a huge following. The man identified as Pastor Godfrey Mangwiro who originally hails from Zimbabwe started his church named Revival for God in 2013 and now has a very huge congregation. 

 

Things changed during the last Sunday service when congregants were dancing and something that looked like a nose poked from the ground. The scared congregants quickly got hold of digging tools and got the shock of their lives when a cows head was dug up.

Speaking to iMzansi, one congregant, Naledi, said:“This pastor recently started performing miracles and would heal people. Now we know his powers came from the dark world”.

 

Angry congregants mobilized and chased the pastor away from the community and the church burnt down. He was forced to take his cow head and muthi with him too.

 

Some community members wanted to beat him up and kill him but the police rescued him and whisked him away. It was not known where he went but some people suggested he might have gone back to Zimbabwe.

Vyacheslav Oliynyk celebrating his Gold medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics

 

This is the unbelievable moment a former Olympic wrestling champion kept seven police officers at bay as they tried to arrest him.

Vyacheslav Oliynyk, who won a gold medal for Ukraine in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, shrugged off pepper spray and batons as officers attempted to restrain him in Kiev.

The former wrestling champion, who had been celebrating his 50th birthday, was eventually tackled to the ground by police who accused him of drink-driving.

A video of the incident, which was later released by local traffic officials, shows Oliynyk arguing with police officers after they pull him over.
 

He appears to shove one of the officers, who responds by firing pepper spray in his face.

But instead of calming the former athlete, it appears to send him into a rage and he begins grappling with two officers.

 

One can be seen striking him with a baton and it isn't long before Oliynyk is bleeding from his head.

The former Olympian is then seen backing away from the officers before launching round two and throwing a punch in the direction of one of them.

It finally takes seven police officers to tackle Oliynyk to the ground, but even then he continues to fight back and prevents them from putting handcuffs on him.

According to reports, the wrestler eventually calmed down for the sake of his young son who was crying in the car.

Speaking to local media, Oliynyk said: 'I admit I was partially guilty, I can't tell you the whole thing. I'm partly guilty because I did not stop and I was ignoring the police.

'But I am not a criminal. As far as I can see there will be a court hearing and they will punish me somehow because they always do.

'However the fact that police let me go home on the same day shows I didn't do anything that bad.'

An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a 14-year-old teenager (names withheld) at the Boys Correctional Centre, Isheri, a suburb of Lagos, for allegedly r*ping a five-year-old daughter of his neighbour. 

 

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, who remanded the accused, over the alleged defilement, then adjourned the case to March 23, to listen to the accused’s bail application. 

 

The accused, a student, who lives with his parents at 2, Kao Close, Santos Estate, Dopemu, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a charge of defilement. 

 

The prosecutor, Benedict Aigbokhan, said the accused committed the offence on Feb. 4, at his residence’s toilet. 

 

“One of the neighbours, who heard the cry of the girl, had to rush into the toilet where he apprehended the accused,” the prosecutor told the court. 

 

The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 137 prescribes that any person who has sexual intercourse with a child is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life. 

 

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
